Centenary Monument

historic

The Centenary Monument stands as a massive white stone arch featuring a carved medallion of King Albert the First of Belgium. It commemorates the one hundredth anniversary of the annexation of the County of Nice to France in eighteen sixty. Sculptor Michel de Tarnowsky designed this work to honor the king, who frequently stayed in Nice during his later years. The monument marks the spot where the people of Nice famously gathered to celebrate their integration into the French nation.
