Place Giuseppe Garibaldi

landmark

Place Giuseppe Garibaldi is a grand, rectangular square lined with ochre-colored buildings that feature Italianate trompe l'oeil facades. Built in the late eighteenth century, it serves as a gateway between the old town and the newer port area. Its most striking feature is the central statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian general born in Nice. Locals often recall how the square was renamed several times to reflect the shifting borders between France and Italy, finally settling on the revolutionary who unified Italy.
