Place Garibaldi

other

Place Garibaldi features a uniform ring of ochre-colored buildings topped by shuttered windows and red-tiled roofs. Constructed in the seventeen eighties, this square was the grand entrance to Nice for travelers arriving from Turin. King Victor Amadeus the third ordered the design to mirror the symmetry of Piedmontese urban planning, moving away from the narrow, medieval alleys of the old town. A bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi stands at the center, watching over the intersection of these aging, perfectly aligned facades.
