Cascade du Château

A massive waterfall plunges down the rocky cliffside of the Colline du Château, feeding a stone basin at the base. It was not there when the citadel stood on this peak for centuries. In seventeen hundred and six, the troops of Louis the Fourteenth leveled the ancient fortress, leaving the mountain barren. The city built this artificial cascade in the nineteenth century to replace the lost military stronghold with a dramatic display of flowing water, drawing fresh life from the city’s canal system.
