The Great Synagogue of Nice stands on Rue Gustave Deloye with a heavy, rectangular facade topped by the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. Built in the eighteen eighties, it replaced a cramped community space in the old town as the Jewish population grew. In September nineteen forty-three, the Gestapo seized the building, using it to store goods they looted from local homes. The rabbi, David Bensoussan, buried the synagogue's holy scrolls in a nearby garden, returning to retrieve them only after the liberation.
