The six-story Belle Époque facade of the Hôtel Nice Excelsior features intricate stone carvings and wrought-iron balconies that stand out against the more modern lines of the Thiers-Durante district. Built in eighteen eighty-four, this building served as a railway hotel for travelers arriving at the nearby Nice-Ville station. During the second world war, the hotel sheltered Jewish families, hiding them from the occupying forces. Today, the hotel preserves these layers of history behind its ornate stonework and quiet lobby entrance.
