Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur de Nice

The facade of the Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur features a high, curved gable decorated with ornate scrolls and statues that stand out against the narrow, clustered buildings of the old town. Known locally as the Gesu, this church was built in the seventeenth century for the Jesuit order. When the Pope suppressed the Jesuits in seventeen seventy-three, the brothers packed their belongings and left the city. The building became a parish church, and the local neighborhood took over its heavy, marble-adorned interior.
