régiment Normandie - Niemen Garden

The name of this garden honors one of the most unusual units of the Second World War. The Normandie-Niemen Regiment was a French fighter squadron that fought on the Eastern Front alongside the Soviet Air Force. They are one of the few Western Allied units that fought directly on Soviet soil, flying Yakovlev fighter planes against German forces from nineteen forty-two until the end of the war. Joseph Stalin gave the unit its name to commemorate their bravery during the intense battles to secure the Niemen River. Over the course of the conflict, the regiment was credited with two hundred and seventy-three aerial victories, and four of its pilots were officially named Heroes of the Soviet Union.
