Eiserner Steg

The Eiserner Steg is a narrow, neo-Gothic iron truss bridge supported by heavy stone piers that spans the Main River. Completed in eighteen sixty-nine, it was financed by Frankfurt citizens because the city council refused to pay for a pedestrian link between the old town and the Sachsenhausen district. During the final days of the second world war, retreating German troops blew up the bridge. Residents rebuilt it by nineteen forty-six, clearing the wreckage by hand to reconnect their divided city.
