Hühnermarkt

The Hühnermarkt is a small, irregular square defined by the jagged timber-framed structures that surround it. While these facades appear medieval, they are modern reconstructions completed in twenty eighteen, following the total destruction of the original neighborhood during Allied bombing raids in nineteen forty-four. Architect Günter Behnisch famously argued against replicating the past, yet the city chose to rebuild the square to evoke its pre-war layout. A fountain topped with a statue of Saint George stands in the center of the cobbles.
