Römerberg

The Römerberg is defined by the jagged, stepped gables of the half-timbered houses lined up along the square. Since the fifteenth century, this site served as the city hall, housing the Römer building with its iconic three-gabled facade. During the coronation of Holy Roman Emperors, new rulers held lavish feasts here, tossing roasted ox and flowing wine to the crowds outside. When Allied bombs flattened the area in nineteen forty-four, city planners painstakingly reconstructed these facades to mirror their medieval appearance.
