Schauspiel Frankfurt

The Schauspiel Frankfurt features a stark, concrete facade punctuated by a series of deep, vertical window bays. This building replaced the original nineteen-twenties theater, which was destroyed during the Allied bombing raids of nineteen forty-four. Architect Otto Apel finished this version in nineteen sixty-three to restore a permanent home for the city's main stage. During construction, workers discovered an unexploded aerial bomb embedded deep in the foundation, requiring a tense evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood to safely remove the debris of war.
