Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM)

The Deutsches Architekturmuseum sits inside a traditional nineteenth-century villa, but inside that shell, architect Oswald Mathias Ungers built a second, independent structure. This house-within-a-house uses a white, grid-like frame to create a series of levels that feel like a labyrinth. When the museum opened in nineteen eighty-four, critics called the design an architectural manifesto because it forces visitors to physically navigate the structural concepts it displays. It remains the only major institution in Germany dedicated entirely to the history of building design.
