Eschenheimer Turm

The Eschenheimer Turm stands forty-seven meters tall, a lone stone cylinder topped with a pointed copper roof and four small turrets. It served as a major gatehouse in Frankfurt’s fourteenth-century fortifications. In eighteen oh three, a local official named Johann Gerhard Christian Thomas fought to save the tower from demolition when the city walls were torn down. He argued that it was a monument to the city’s history, and the gatehouse remained as the only survivor of the original defensive system.
