The English Theatre Frankfurt occupies the ground floor of an unassuming nineteen-seventies office block. Inside, the space functions as the largest English-speaking theater in continental Europe. It began in nineteen seventy-nine when two founders, Mary Hewlett and James Alexander, rented a small cellar elsewhere in the city to perform plays for expatriates. They moved here in two thousand one to secure a permanent stage, and today, the theater produces full-scale Broadway and West End plays for a diverse local audience.
