Holy Church of Saint George of Lycabettus

The whitewashed chapel of Saint George sits at the very summit of Lycabettus Hill, marked by its bright blue domed roof and the tall Greek flag fluttering beside it. Built in eighteen hundred and eighty-five, it replaced an even older seventeenth-century church. During the German occupation of the second world war, the chapel served as a secret meeting spot for Greek resistance fighters who used the high vantage point to send coded light signals to colleagues hiding in the city below.
