Lycabettus Hill Funicular

The Lycabettus Hill Funicular disappears into the limestone rock of the hill, moving through a tunnel carved straight through the earth to reach the summit. It opened in nineteen sixty-five to spare visitors the steep, grueling climb to the Saint George Chapel at the peak. Before the tracks existed, people relied on mules or their own legs. Construction crews spent years boring into the hillside, eventually installing a counterbalanced cable system that hauls two carriages up the slope every half hour.
