Sea Gate

historic

The Sea Gate features a pair of massive, polygonal towers flanking a narrow, vaulted passage that connects the harbor directly to the medieval city. Built by the Knights of Saint John in the late fifteenth century, the structure served as the primary entrance for diplomats and merchants arriving by ship. Master of the Order Pierre d'Aubusson ordered the heavy construction, specifically designing the thick masonry to withstand the force of incoming cannon fire from the sea.
