Saint Athanasios Gate

The Saint Athanasios Gate is the only entrance in the medieval walls of Rhodes that remains permanently blocked by masonry. Known to locals as the Gate of Saint Anthony, this archway served as a primary defensive bottleneck for the Knights Hospitaller. When the Ottoman forces besieged the city in fifteen twenty-two, they focused their cannons on the ramparts near here. Following their victory, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent ordered the gate sealed with stone to prevent any future surprise attacks from entering the city.
