Suleymaniye Mosque

The Suleymaniye Mosque features a distinctive pink-hued exterior and a tall, slender minaret that rises above the rooftops of the Old Town. Built in the sixteenth century shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes, it stands on the site of the former Church of the Holy Apostles. When Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent captured the island in fifteen twenty-two, he ordered this mosque constructed to commemorate his victory. The building served as the spiritual center for the island’s new rulers for centuries.
