Two bronze stags stand on stone pedestals at the entrance to the Mandraki harbor, marking the spot where the legendary Colossus of Rhodes once towered over passing ships. These statues, one male and one female, embody the symbol of the island. Local tradition holds that stags were introduced to Rhodes to clear the island of venomous snakes. They watch over the harbor today, cast in the nineteen thirties during the Italian occupation to frame the gateway to the ancient city.
