Saint John’s Gate features a pointed arch carved from heavy volcanic stone, topped by the weathered, sculpted relief of a shield bearing the cross of the Order of Saint John. This entrance served as a primary portal for the Knights Hospitaller during the fourteen hundreds. When the Ottoman forces laid siege to the city in fifteen twenty-two, the gate became a focus of intense fighting. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent eventually granted the defeated Knights safe passage through these very walls.
