Our Lady of the Castle (Panayia)

religious

The Panayia of the Castle features a massive, fortress-like stone exterior topped by a distinct, squat dome that marks it as the oldest church within the Old Town of Rhodes. It served as the Knights Hospitaller's primary cathedral during their occupation of the island. When the Ottoman forces captured the city in fifteen twenty-two, they converted the sanctuary into a mosque, adding a mihrab and a minaret to the structure, which were removed only after the Italians took control in the early twentieth century.
