Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes occupies the medieval Hospital of the Knights of Saint John. Its heavy stone facade, punctured by a single, formidable gateway, protected the wounded crusaders who arrived here in the fifteenth century. Inside, the garden courtyard still houses the marble Lion of Rhodes. This beast once stood guard over the harbor, yet after an earthquake shattered it, the knights hauled the pieces here. It remains a silent sentinel in the shade of the old infirmary’s vaulted stone halls.
