Windmills of Rhodes

The three surviving windmills stand on the tip of the Mandraki harbor mole, identified by their circular stone towers and the absence of sails. Built in the fourteenth century, these structures once ground grain brought in by merchant ships docking in the harbor below. In the nineteen thirties, the Italian governor Mario Lago ordered the removal of the remaining wooden mechanisms to create a cleaner aesthetic for the port. Now, the shells remain as quiet markers of the harbor's long history as a maritime hub.
