Bastion del Carretto

The Bastion del Carretto is a heavy, semicircular projection of stone jutting out from the medieval walls of Rhodes. Built by the Knights Hospitaller in the early sixteenth century, this massive fortification occupies the corner where the land meets the harbor defenses. When the Ottoman Empire besieged the city in fifteen twenty-two, the cannons of the Ottoman commander Ahmed Pasha focused their fire here. The stone walls bear deep scars from that bombardment, marking the final days of the Knights on the island.
