Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus

Four massive columns stand atop the Acropolis of Rhodes, marking the remains of the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus. These remnants belong to a sanctuary built during the Hellenistic period, when Rhodes controlled the sea routes of the eastern Mediterranean. Citizens gathered here to offer sacrifices to the gods who supposedly protected the city. Diagoras of Rhodes, a famous boxer and Olympic victor, famously saw his sons crowned as winners while he watched from these very slopes during the Games.
