The Shree Annapurna Mandir features a heavy, ornate silver mask on the deity of Goddess Annapurna, which appears only once a year. Devotees visit this shrine to offer prayers to the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment. Legend holds that when famine struck the world, Shiva begged for alms from his consort, Annapurna, who holds the golden ladle. Peshwa Baji Rao the second constructed the current structure in the early nineteenth century after the original temple faced destruction during earlier periods of conflict.
