Golden Acre

other

The Golden Acre center sits on the site of the old Cape Town railway station. When engineers dug the foundations in the nineteen seventies, they unearthed the remnants of the eighteenth-century Dutch East India Company ramparts. Instead of clearing the site entirely, they kept a portion of the stone walls visible beneath the modern shopping levels. These heavy, weathered rocks remain in the basement, providing a quiet, subterranean link to the colonial defenses that once stood guard over the bay.
