Greenmarket Square

Greenmarket Square features a ring of weathered cobblestones surrounding a central plaza, overlooked by the stone facade of the Old Town House. Established in sixteen ninety-six, it functioned as the city's primary market and a slave trading post during the Dutch colonial era. In the late eighties, the square served as the site of the Peace March, where thousands of residents defied apartheid-era protest bans. Today, rows of stalls filled with African crafts occupy the space where farmers once sold their daily produce.
