The Namaqua House Apartments on Greenmarket Square stand out for the decorative cast-iron balconies that wrap around the building’s facade. Built in nineteen oh five, this structure replaced the original Namaqua House, a hotel that served travelers when the square was still the city’s primary marketplace. While most buildings in the area were reconstructed throughout the twentieth century, this brick building retained its Edwardian charm. A local merchant once operated his business on the ground floor, keeping a live leopard in the cellar.
