The Paul Sauer Building occupies a sharp corner on Adderley Street, distinguished by its jagged, zig-zagging concrete facade that cuts against the flatter lines of its neighbors. Designed in the nineteen sixties by architect Hannes Meiring, the structure houses offices behind a series of cantilevered fins intended to deflect the harsh Cape sun. While the modernist exterior catches the light, the building occupies the site where the old Standard Bank once stood, marking a shift in the city's architectural skyline toward industrial expressionism.
