Established in eighteen eighty-one, it serves the descendants of enslaved people and political exiles brought to the Cape by the Dutch. When the community faced forced removals during the apartheid era, the mosque acted as a gathering point for families refusing to leave their ancestral neighborhood. Imam Ganief Booley once described the mosque as the heartbeat of the community, holding the neighborhood together through decades of uncertainty.
