Waalburg building

The Waalburg building stands out on Wale Street with its heavy, mid-twentieth-century stone facade and clean, geometric lines. Completed in nineteen fifty-five, it replaced older structures to provide modern office and residential space in the heart of Cape Town. During the late sixties, the building became a site of bureaucratic tension when the government began enforcing new permit regulations for tenants. It remains a rigid, imposing landmark that marks the transition of the city center into the concrete era of the fifties.
