Burgerhuis Museum

The Burgerhuis, or Citizen House, stands out for its curved gables and the distinctive thatched roof that defines eighteenth century Cape Dutch architecture. Built in seventeen ninety-seven, the house served as the official residence for the secretary of the local landdrost, or magistrate. During the nineteenth century, the building housed a school for girls for several decades. Today, it contains a collection of period furniture and antiques that reflect the domestic life of Stellenbosch’s early colonial elite.
