Rooiplein

The Rooiplein is a rectangular courtyard surfaced in deep red clay bricks, set between the university library and the main lecture halls. Students named it for the striking color of the paving, which glows intensely under the afternoon sun. In nineteen seventy-six, the square became the site of a tense standoff when hundreds of students gathered to protest apartheid laws. They faced off against police lines, turning this academic courtyard into a primary stage for political dissent within the university system.
