The storefront of Oom Samie Se Winkel on Dorp Street is crowded with antique wares, dried chilies, and hand-painted wooden signs that spill out onto the sidewalk. This building began as a general dealer in nineteen oh four, serving farmers who traveled into Stellenbosch with their wagons. When the owner, Samuel Johannes Volsteedt, opened his doors, he sold everything from farm implements to imported spices. The shop keeps that nineteenth century character, resisting the modernization that changed every other business on the street.
