Rhenish Church (One Rynse Kerk)

The Rhenish Church in Stellenbosch wears a distinct, curved Cape Dutch gable topped with a small wooden belfry. Built in eighteen twenty-three, it served the local enslaved population and the Khoi people who were excluded from the town’s main congregation. When the Rhenish Missionary Society arrived, they gathered congregants here for services in Dutch. Local residents eventually grew frustrated by the noise of the worshippers, and the congregation was forced to sell their original bell to satisfy their neighbors.
