The Wijnhuis building stands out for its high, Dutch gabled roof and the dark, ornate woodwork framing its entrance. Built in nineteen oh four, it served as a grocery store and later a hotel for visitors arriving in Stellenbosch by train. The architect, Cleary and Blackbeard, designed the facade to mirror the town’s Cape Dutch heritage, even as they incorporated modern Victorian brickwork. Today, the building houses a restaurant, though its thick walls still hold the chill of the early twentieth century.
