De Akker is identifiable by the heavy, whitewashed gables and thick, thatched roof typical of the Cape Dutch style, now housing a pub and restaurant. It stands on the corner of Dorp Street, but its history began as a modest dwelling in the early nineteenth century. Before the students arrived, the building served as a home for local families. Inside, the original yellowwood beams remain, and the low ceilings provide a quiet contrast to the noisy, crowded energy of the patio outside.
