Van Riebeeck Street runs through the heart of Stellenbosch, distinguished by a double row of old oak trees that form a continuous green tunnel over the road. These oaks were first planted in eighteen ten by Magistrate Jan Jacobus Ryno Marais, who wanted to line the path to his home. Marais famously used the wood from these trees to build his own wine casks, a move that enraged the local town council and led to his eventual removal from the office of magistrate.
