Bethel Baptist Church sits on Meeting Street, marked by a crisp, cream-colored exterior and tall, arched windows. It dates back to eighteen oh one, when a group of enslaved Africans and free people began gathering here to worship. They established the first Baptist congregation in the Bahamas under the leadership of Prince Williams, a formerly enslaved man who walked from South Carolina to Florida before reaching Nassau. The stone walls hold the legacy of those founders who built their own sanctuary while fighting for emancipation.
