Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle sits atop Bennetts Hill, shaped like the bow of a ship pointed toward the harbor. Built in seventeen ninety-three by Lord Dunmore, the fort guarded Nassau from potential invaders during a time of constant naval anxiety. Its limestone walls were carved directly from the surrounding rock. Dunmore named it for his second title, Viscount Fincastle. The massive structure never actually fired a shot in anger, instead serving as a signal tower for ships entering the port below.
