The University of Glasgow Cloisters are defined by a rhythmic series of heavy, arched stone pillars that support the vaulted ceiling of the undercroft. They link the two main quadrangles of the Gilbert Scott building, framing a quiet corridor of patterned tile and cool, dark shadows. When the university moved here from the High Street in eighteen seventy, architect George Gilbert Scott designed these arches to carry the massive weight of the tower above, embedding the structure firmly into the hillside.
