Andrew Carnegie provided the funds for this building in nineteen oh five, insisting that the library serve the local working population of Glasgow. During the Second World War, the library cellar doubled as a public air raid shelter. Residents huddled beneath the stone arches while bombs fell on the city above, and the shelves remained standing through every night of the blitz.
