St Aloysius' Church, Garnethill

The facade of Saint Aloysius Church features a row of saints carved into stone niches, topped by a slender, pointed spire that rises sharply above the tenements of Garnethill. Opened in eighteen ninety-three, the church was built for the Jesuit community in Glasgow. When the interior was decorated in the early twentieth century, the Jesuits hired a decorative artist named Antonio Messore to cover the walls in intricate, gold-leafed baroque patterns. He spent years on a scaffold, painting every inch of the vaulted ceiling.
