Britannia Panopticon

The Britannia Panopticon is a wooden, horseshoe-shaped balcony tucked behind a plain facade in the Trongate. It is the oldest surviving music hall in the world, opened in eighteen fifty-seven. Performers like Stan Laurel made their professional debut on its small, cramped stage. Long after the theater closed in nineteen thirty-eight, the space sat silent and boarded up for decades, gathering dust and rain, until a preservation trust started the slow work of pulling the remains out of the shadows.
