Custom House

The Custom House in Glasgow features a distinct neoclassical facade defined by a heavy portico of six massive Ionic columns. Designed by John Taylor and finished in eighteen forty, the building once served as the collection point for duties on all goods arriving at the Broomielaw quay. When the city’s trade expanded, customs officers occupied these rooms to track the merchant ships that fueled Glasgow’s wealth. Today, the structure houses offices and apartments, hiding the ledger books that once mapped the global tobacco trade.
