Tolbooth Steeple

The Tolbooth Steeple rises as a lone stone tower at the intersection of High Street and Trongate. This relic is all that remains of the seventeenth-century Glasgow City Chambers, which once served as the city’s administrative hub and prison. Inside the original structure, the town council met to govern, while the basement held criminals awaiting trial. When the council moved to new offices in eighteen fourteen, the city demolished the municipal buildings, leaving only this spire to mark the spot.
