The John Knox Monument stands as a massive Doric column rising from the summit of the Glasgow Necropolis. At the very top, a stone figure of the Scottish reformer stares grimly toward the cathedral, his hand outstretched as if in mid-sermon. In eighteen twenty-five, residents raised this pillar to honor the man who shaped the national church. Years later, local builders found the statue’s internal iron rod had rusted, causing the heavy stone head to slowly tilt, perpetually nodding toward the city below.
